On the eve of the friendly match against Comoros, Pape Gueye spoke at a press conference this Saturday in Marseille, alongside Patrick Vieira. The Senegalese midfielder was questioned about his comments made after Senegal's elimination in the Round of 16 of the World Cup against Belgium.
At that time, Pape Gueye stated that he would no longer play for the national team as long as the former coaching staff was in place, while promising to return later to explain the reasons for this decision. Following the change of staff, the player has finally rejoined the Lions.
Pape Gueye today defends the position he took back then. “I think you have the answer to your question. It’s a decision I made, which I was going to defend, and I am happy to be here. I will give my best to help this team, that’s what matters most. Maybe there will be an opportunity to discuss it, but that’s not the priority today,” he stated.
With Patrick Vieira and his team, Pape Gueye now claims to be focused on the work and development of this new squad. “As the coach pointed out, a new staff is in place. We are working efficiently, everyone is attentive at training. We are trying to do everything to meet the coach's expectations,” he added.
