As the friendly match against Comoros approaches, scheduled for Sunday in Marseille, Patrick Vieira has responded to the criticism that emerged following Senegal's first two matches in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The Lions' coach acknowledges the expectations surrounding his team and assures that his group will rise to the challenges.
“Expectations are part of high-level competition; it’s a daily commitment,” Vieira stated during the press conference. The French coach admits there are areas to improve after the matches against Mozambique and Ethiopia, while highlighting the four points earned from those two away games. “We are aware of our shortcomings and our strengths. We will be ready for the competition,” he asserted.
The Senegalese coach also recognizes the public pressure on his team. “The strength of Senegal, which can also be a disadvantage, is that there are 22 million coaches. It’s simply passion. There are 22 million people who want to see Senegal reach the top,” he explained. For Vieira, this expectation mainly reflects the ambition surrounding the Lions.
“Public pressure means having ambition,” the coach continued, believing that his group is on the right track. “When I see the players' attitude, the work they have put in despite the challenges faced, I am convinced that we are on the right path,” he added, stating that there is “no doubt” about the staff's desire to meet expectations.
Against Comoros, Vieira aims to continue building his team and address the weaknesses observed in the first two matches. “We must keep working. It is essential to have expectations, organization, and a game plan. We are putting all of this in place. When we work effectively, success follows naturally,” the coach concluded.
