Sofyan Amrabat shared the reasons that led him to join Ajax this summer. The experienced midfielder was particularly impressed by the ambitions of technical director Jordi Cruyff, who wants to see the Amsterdam club quickly return to the top.
Amrabat arrived in Amsterdam as a free transfer at the end of August, signing a contract valid until mid-2028. In an interview with ESPN, the Moroccan international expressed that Cruyff's plans had particularly captivated him.
“What struck me the most is his ambition. He wants to win and be competitive on three fronts. I also have a strong desire to win and I am determined,” said Amrabat.
Discussions between Cruyff and Amrabat had already begun several months earlier. The technical director had contacted the midfielder in April while he was still playing for Real Betis. Upon his arrival at Ajax, Amrabat mentioned that Cruyff had piqued his curiosity about the project in Amsterdam.
“He talked to me about the project with Ajax. It was a great story. We stayed in touch during this whole period,” Amrabat said at the time. Coach Míchel Sánchez also reached out to him later. The midfielder understood that Ajax wanted to recruit him in Amsterdam.
Amrabat is very complimentary of Cruyff for his performances so far. “I think he has already demonstrated his skills. Of course, we will have to see where we stand at the end of the season. But I think he has built a very solid team, with an excellent staff. Hats off to him,” said the international with 78 caps.
