Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro praised star Cristiano Ronaldo after he announced his retirement from international duty with the Portugal national team, expressing gratitude for his contributions to football in the country over the years.

Montenegro wrote in a post on his social media accounts: “Thank you! Everything you have done for Portugal on the pitch will remain forever. And now, even off the field, you will continue to represent Portugal to the world.”

The Prime Minister accompanied his post with a mention of Ronaldo's official account, along with an emoji of the Portuguese flag, expressing his pride in the achievements of the national team captain.

Ronaldo is considered one of the most prominent players in the history of Portuguese and global football, having helped elevate his national team’s presence on the international stage and becoming a significant symbol of Portuguese sport.

Montenegro had previously expressed his admiration for Ronaldo on several occasions, including during the celebrations of the Portuguese national team winning the UEFA Nations League title in June 2025, when the Prime Minister entered the locker room to share in the players' joy and took a commemorative photo with the Portuguese star.

The announcement of Ronaldo's retirement from international football comes after a long career with the Portuguese national team, during which he achieved individual and collective accomplishments that made him one of the most notable names in football history.
