Mercedes F1 chief Toto Wolff has brushed aside claims from former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko that George Russell has no path to recovery after being outpaced for the world title by Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli is poised to be officially recognized as champion in the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix unless unforeseen events postpone his crowning by a week.

As Mercedes adapted to the new 2026 regulations, it offered long-standing driver Russell a prime opportunity to contend for the championship, yet he has been largely eclipsed by his less seasoned teammate, who clinched five straight victories at the start of the season to seize the lead in the standings.

Russell experienced a momentary revival post-summer break, but due to a mix of difficulties with the car handling and unfortunate reliability issues, the 27-year-old never seemed positioned to overcome Antonelli, and he now risks slipping to third behind Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.

Sky Germany analyst and former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who departed the team at the close of last year, asserts that Russell cannot rebound from this defeat against his 20-year-old teammate.

"Russell is no longer the top driver." Marko stated as Antonelli secured his ninth victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix in Austin while Russell finished eighth.

"Antonelli has clearly taken that role from him. I doubt he will ever have another shot at the world championship or be granted number one status anywhere."

After an opening weekend victory in Melbourne, George Russell has been overshadowed by his younger teammate throughout 2026.

Post-race, Wolff rejected Marko's assertions, emphasizing that with a fresh start and a car better suited to his driving style, Russell can still compete for world titles.

"Helmut, he's my not-so-friendly Austrian acquaintance, but I value his perspective," Wolff remarked. "However, I believe he is mistaken about George. George possesses all the talent. I think the car is not compatible with him.

"At the season's onset, it might be challenging to manage a scenario where you feel this is my year, and then there’s this wunderkind on the other side who starts to chip away at your confidence.

"And I truly believe that in a new season, George, if we can provide him with a fast car, he absolutely has what it takes to secure a championship.

"So, it’s a bit simplistic to disregard all those years where he triumphed in F2 and F3, his rookie seasons, and his back-to-back European championships in karting; that experience is still significant."

Heading into this weekend's race in Mexico, Antonelli holds a 123-point advantage over Russell, with 125 points available across the final five races. Should Russell win at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, all Antonelli requires is a ninth-place finish to become the youngest world champion in F1 history. If Hamilton claims victory, just a single point in 10th would suffice for the 20-year-old.
