Mercedes introduced a significant upgrade package at Sepang for the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix, and expectations for the Silver Arrows were high. Kimi Antonelli hinted at something extraordinary after leading FP3, but qualifying turned out to be challenging. Toto Wolff suspects there is "something else at play" affecting his team's performance.
Championship frontrunner Antonelli qualified in fourth place on the second row, while George Russell will start from a disappointing eighth position. After what has largely been a dominating season for Mercedes, this outcome has taken the team principal by surprise.
"Very difficult to comprehend," he told Sky Sports F1. "We encountered some unexpected car behavior on Friday that we hadn't seen all year. However, you could argue that the tarmac is quite different from all the other circuits.
"Things looked promising in the morning. It seems like we have at least made progress in understanding with Kimi. Qualifying felt like a return to earlier issues, just lacking performance."
He was further questioned about the car behavior he referred to.
"It appears we are experiencing significant drag, as it's the first time we've lost considerable time on the straights, particularly to Max [Verstappen]. Additionally, in low-speed corners like Turn 2, we're struggling to turn the car, experiencing excessive understeer. Overall, these are issues we haven't encountered all season."

This season, Mercedes machinery has excelled in power-focused circuits, with the W17 featuring a robust power unit and remarkable straight-line speed. Consequently, attention is being directed toward the upgrade package.
"There is something else happening. We need to figure it out. We're currently analyzing the data and collaborating because we still believe the upgrade is effective. We just need to determine why it's not performing here."
The harsh track surface and heat might also be playing a role, but the extent of this performance decline is concerning for the Austrian.
"It's so different, yet you expect to gain three-tenths, and it seems like we’re losing three to five-tenths and missing the top three for the first time due to the track. It's tough, but I believe we will find a solution."
With tire degradation presenting another challenge for the silver team this race weekend, the drivers may face a difficult race ahead.
"No, I’m never optimistic," Wolff replied when asked if Sunday’s race pace might improve compared to these qualifying results. "Even if we had secured pole with a five-tenths advantage, I wouldn't have felt overly enthusiastic about tomorrow.
"I genuinely have no idea what to anticipate for the race in the heat. It could improve, or it could worsen. Right now, it's about comprehending the car's performance."
