Liverpool begins its Champions League journey with an important victory over Atletico Madrid.
Liverpool kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with an important 2-1 victory over Spanish side Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, coming from behind to win at Anfield.
Atlético took the lead with a goal from Marcos Llorente in the 17th minute, but Dominik Szoboszlai equalized for Liverpool in the 40th minute, while Argentine Alexis Mac Allister scored the winning goal in the 50th minute.
With this victory, Liverpool earned their first 3 points in the league stage, while Atlético Madrid left the opening round without any points.
The English team also continued their recent dominance over Atlético, achieving their fourth consecutive win in the Champions League.
Atlético strikes first, Liverpool responds
The match started at a fast pace, with both teams exchanging attacking attempts, before Llorente put Atlético ahead after a pass from Julián Álvarez, finding himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Alisson Becker and lifting the ball over him.
Liverpool sought to get back into the match, increasing their pressure on Jan Oblak's goal until Szoboszlai managed to score the equalizer just 5 minutes before the end of the first half.
Mac Allister seals the match
Liverpool entered the second half with greater attacking pressure, needing only 5 minutes to turn the score in their favor.
Mac Allister fired a powerful shot from outside the box in the 50th minute, which Oblak could not save, putting the hosts ahead.
Atlético attempted to come back in the remaining minutes, but Liverpool's defense and goalkeeper Alisson held firm.
Jérémy Frimpong scored a third goal for Liverpool in the 89th minute, but the referee disallowed it for offside, ending the match with the English team winning 2-1.
Liverpool will visit Austrian side LASK Linz in the next round, while Atlético Madrid will host Manchester United in an exciting clash.
