World Cup 2026: Sports Minister Kofi Adams highlighted the Black Stars' lack of unity.

Kofi Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has recognized that the Black Stars lacked the necessary unity and comprehension to consistently challenge the elite football nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana's journey in North America concluded in the Round of 32 following a close 1-0 loss to Colombia, where Jhon Arias netted the crucial goal.

The Black Stars began their fifth World Cup appearance on a positive note, securing a 1-0 victory over Panama and managing a goalless draw with England. However, a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match allowed them to progress to the knockout stage as one of the top third-placed teams, where they ultimately fell to Colombia.

In an interview with Joy News, Adams reflected on the team's performance, noting that Ghana's deficiencies were clear when facing opponents who had dedicated years to developing cohesive squads with strong chemistry.

The Buem MP stated that the disparity between Ghana and some rivals stemmed not from a lack of skill but rather from preparation, continuity, and familiarity among the players.

"When you encounter teams that have had ample opportunity to prepare thoroughly, alongside management that has been consistent for quite some time, a squad that may have several players from the same club who have played together for an extended period, any team that boasts solid and coordinated aspects, whether in defense, midfield, or attack, has a clear understanding of one another," he explained.

Adams emphasized that the Black Stars did not exhibit the same level of coordination on the field.

"At times, when one player has the ball and is advancing, you can observe two or three other players moving into spaces where he could pass the ball for them to capitalize. We seemed to lack that instinct," he added.

Despite the disappointing exit, the Sports Minister maintained that there were positives to glean from Ghana's campaign.

He highlighted the initial win over Panama as a pivotal result that provided the Black Stars with momentum leading into their matchup with England.

Adams also defended Ghana's display against the Three Lions, contending that the team performed well against one of the tournament favorites and deserved more from the match.

"In our match against England, we demonstrated a certain level of class and neutralized all their movements. Regardless of the circumstances, we stifled their play," he stated.

The Minister further asserted that Ghana was unfortunate not to receive critical decisions from the officials during the match.

"It was evident that many believed Ghana was wronged in that game. We had a clear penalty that went uncalled, and there was another incident where an English player should have received a red card, which did not happen. Thus, people felt we were wronged in that match."

Following their World Cup campaign, the Black Stars will shift their focus to qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana has been placed in Group C alongside Côte d'Ivoire, Somalia, and The Gambia, with the qualifying rounds scheduled to commence in September.
