The national team failed to meet expectations during the U21 category competitions at the African Karate Championship held in Algiers from September 9 to 13.
On the third day of the competition, which took place on Saturday, the "hopefuls" category secured only 8 medals, including one gold, three silver, and four bronze, while Egyptian fighters excelled.
The sole gold medal came from Melissia Louni, who won the title in the kumite event for the 55 kg weight class.
Algeria earned silver medals through Nizar Achouri in the +84 kg category, Aicha Rwaishi in the +68 kg category, and Alaaeddine Qichou in the 60 kg category.
On the other hand, the Algerian athletes achieved 4 bronze medals, awarded to Heba Allah Ghodbane and Louay Lwaseef in the individual kata events, as well as Idris Melina in the 50 kg category and Gouri Abdelrazak in the 84 kg category.
Before the conclusion of the African Karate Championship today, Sunday, with the team events, Algeria ranks second in the standings with a total of 37 medals, consisting of 8 gold, 12 silver, and 17 bronze.
Egypt leads the standings with a total of 46 medals, including 27 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze. Tunisia follows in third place with 16 medals, comprising 5 gold, 1 silver, and 10 bronze.
It is worth noting that the "Algeria 2026" edition is an important stage towards qualifying for the World Karate Championship scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, from November 20 to 22, 2026.
