The project to upgrade the Grand Stadium of Marrakech has entered a new technical phase, following the awarding of a major contract worth 1.265 billion dirhams to the "Lamalif" group, which specializes in public lighting, urban development, and energy solutions. This contract aims to implement a comprehensive set of electrical, digital, and security installations in preparation for enhancing the facility's readiness to host major sporting events, including the 2030 World Cup.
The deal pertains to the fourth phase of the upgrade project, which includes high and low voltage electricity, after the call for tenders was launched on July 17, with bids opened on September 2. The duration for executing the works is set at 18 months.
The nature of the equipment included in the contract reveals a clear ambition to achieve a technological leap in stadium management; the works will not only focus on electrical installations and specialized lighting but will also extend to creating a comprehensive digital infrastructure to support various facilities within the venue.
The digital aspect includes initial extensions for information and telephone networks, establishing wired and wireless information networks, and communication equipment, allowing for the connection of various stadium facilities and providing a communication infrastructure that meets the technical requirements associated with organizing international sporting competitions.
Regarding security, the contract includes the installation of access control systems and a video surveillance network, enhancing the ability to monitor crowd movements and secure entrances and internal facilities, especially during matches and events that attract tens of thousands of fans.
The upgrade also encompasses audiovisual equipment, with the installation of screens and LED strips, traditional sound systems, and safety-specific systems, in addition to a broadcasting network and display and projection systems, aligning with the increasing demands in television production, media coverage, and organizing major events.
The works also include equipping the conference hall with the necessary technical means, aimed at enhancing the readiness of facilities designated for media and activities accompanying matches, as part of a comprehensive vision to modernize various services related to stadium operations.
The central technical management system "GTC" has emerged as one of the main components of the contract; it is expected to allow for centralized control of several facility installations and monitor their operation, supporting the transition towards a more digitized management of infrastructure and enhancing the ability to track performance and intervene when issues arise.
These investments are part of a comprehensive project to upgrade the Grand Stadium of Marrakech, which was launched in 2011; the national company responsible for the construction and management of sports facilities, "Sonarges," aims to align the venue with the required standards for hosting international competitions, alongside other projects related to upgrading the stands, providing full coverage of the stadium, and increasing its capacity.
The Grand Stadium of Marrakech is one of six Moroccan stadiums nominated to host matches for the 2030 World Cup, which will be jointly held by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, making the race to upgrade its electrical, digital, and security installations part of the broader program to prepare national sports facilities for this global event.
