Former Spanish F1 commentator Antonio Lobato has revealed that the BBC is working on a documentary focusing on the tumultuous 2007 season shared by Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso at McLaren.

Lobato, now co-director of the Spanish site SoyMotor.com, talked about the rumored project on the outlet's Twitch channel earlier this week. It's important to mention that the BBC has not yet confirmed the existence of this documentary.

"It will definitely be told. The question is... what exactly will be covered? Because I know the BBC is preparing a documentary," he stated.

Lobato was the voice of F1 broadcasts in Spain during Alonso's peak years, as he contended for two championship titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, and throughout his 2007 season with McLaren.

"They invited me to participate, but I declined the offer," he shared regarding the documentary. "I prefer not to get entangled in those narratives. I know what I experienced, I know what transpired, perhaps from my perspective, which might be slightly skewed, and when the documentary is released, I'm eager to view it."

He also mentioned that other journalists who covered that season will contribute.

"I know there are fellow journalists who were present that year who will participate, who will share their accounts of what occurred. We’ll see how they approach it, how it’s produced, and how that story unfolds."

A season like no other

The 2007 season stands out as one of the most exhilarating in the championship's history. Alonso joined McLaren as the two-time defending champion, while Hamilton made his debut, eager to make an immediate impact.

As the season progressed, tensions escalated, culminating in a dramatic finish where both drivers ended the season tied on points at 109, just one point shy of Kimi Raikkonen, who clinched the title. McLaren also faced exclusion from the constructors' championship due to the Spygate scandal, with Alonso departing for Renault at the season's conclusion.

Nearly 20 years later, both drivers continue to compete. Hamilton is currently third in the 2026 drivers' standings with Ferrari, amassing 229 points. Alonso, now at Aston Martin and facing challenges, has seven points.

Both will be present on the grid at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, scheduled from October 23 to 25.
