Red Bull's Max Verstappen has addressed the backlash he’s faced from former drivers, with the four-time champion suggesting that this criticism arises from pundits lacking a grasp of the 2026 regulations.
In an interview with De Telegraaf during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, after being presented with recent remarks from 1996 world champion Damon Hill, the Dutch driver shared his view on why he believes former racers often give “very peculiar responses” during interviews.
“Do you know what the issue is with many ex-drivers?” Verstappen stated. “They don’t familiarize themselves with the new regulations at all. So they lack a clear understanding of how the engine operates and functions. Then they are asked about it on TV, and sometimes very peculiar responses emerge.”
He was quick to clarify that this “doesn’t apply to everyone, but it does to a few.”
Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris have both expressed support for his views on the regulations, but Verstappen mentioned he isn’t seeking validation. Instead, he was merely sharing his perspective on what he has observed this season.
“I simply express my thoughts on what I perceive as incorrect and what could use improvement,” he elaborated. “At times, I face criticism for this from certain individuals, or they claim they don’t grasp my meaning. But ultimately, it will be evident whether something is beneficial or detrimental.”

A critic who is now succeeding again
Verstappen has been one of the most vocal opponents of the new regulations implemented this season. The adjustments introduced new power units that heavily depend on electric power. While he did contemplate retiring from F1, he ultimately renewed his contract with the Milton Keynes team until 2030 just two months ago.
This timing proved fortuitous, as he has recently achieved consecutive victories in Malaysia and Singapore. He currently ranks fourth in the drivers’ standings with 221 points, trailing Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by only eight points.
The United States Grand Prix is scheduled for October 23 to 25.
