The Central Coast Mariners have signed Nigerian junior international goalkeeper Rufai Abubakar.
Abubakar was selected to represent Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and played a key role in the Flying Eagles U20's third-place finish during the tournament.
At just 18 years old, he came on late in the bronze medal match against Egypt, making two saves as a penalty shootout specialist, helping his team win 4-1 on penalties.
Abubakar joins the Mariners after playing for Nigerian club Mavlon FC. Mariners' sporting director Matt Simon highlighted Abubakar's physical and mental qualities to explain the club's excitement about this young goalkeeper.
“Rufai undoubtedly has an impressive physique for a goalkeeper, but succeeding in this position requires much more than just size,” Simon said on the Central Coast Mariners' website.
“What we truly value is his mentality. Goalkeepers need to be calm under pressure, able to make decisions, and possess the confidence to shine in critical moments.”
“Being involved in an international tournament match at his age, knowing there would be a penalty shootout, and making two saves speaks volumes about the player's character. He is only 18 and has enormous potential, which makes this opportunity particularly exciting.”
“We are confident in providing an environment conducive to the development of young talent, and we look forward to working with Rufai to help him take the next steps in his career.”
Abubakar himself expressed his eagerness to play in the A-League. “I am very happy and proud to join the Central Coast Mariners,” he said on the club's website.
“Coming to Australia is a fantastic opportunity for me, and I am determined to work hard every day to continue to improve.”
“As a goalkeeper, there are always lessons to be learned. I want to work with the coaches, give my best every day in training, and learn from the other goalkeepers and players around me.”
“Representing Nigeria has taught me a lot about pressure and responsibility, and I want to bring that mentality to the Mariners. It’s a new country, a new club, and a new challenge for me. I can’t wait to get started and show Mariners supporters who I am.”
