“Mazadona”.. A Heavy Title and a Talent Making Waves
The official account of the Ballon d'Or highlighted Algerian international Ibrahim Maza, showcasing his football journey and impressive rise.
The “Ballon D’or” account noted that the player for the “Fennecs” is nicknamed “Mazadona,” a name inspired by the Argentine legend and the greatest player in history, Diego Maradona.
The “Ballon d'Or” account raised legitimate questions about awarding such a title to a player who is not yet twenty, given the weight of the comparison with Maradona.
However, it affirmed that Maza, despite his early career, has recently displayed significant skills that have made him shine as one of the most prominent talents of the new generation.
The same source reviewed Maza's beginnings and his move to the Hertha Berlin academy in 2018, followed by his professional debut in 2023, before transferring to Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, where he scored 5 goals and provided as many assists in 45 matches.
It praised the noticeable development of the “Fennecs” player with Leverkusen, recalling his standout performance against Manchester City in the Champions League, and Atletico Madrid's interest in signing him, which his club rejected.
The “Ballon d'Or” account also commended Maza's character, discipline, and continuous desire to learn and improve, indicating that his future remains promising.
It highlighted his choice to represent Algeria, participating with the “Fennecs” in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the 2026 World Cup, in addition to fulfilling his dream of playing alongside Riyad Mahrez, one of his childhood idols.
It confirmed that Maza, despite growing up in Germany, has maintained a strong connection to his father's roots, visiting his family in Algiers every summer. While German is his mother tongue, Arabic has been part of his daily life with his father.
It added: “When it came to choosing the national team he would represent, Maza had multiple options. From 2022 to 2024, he played with Germany's youth teams, but at the end of 2024, he decided to change his sporting nationality and began representing his father's homeland: Algeria. Since then, Maza has played 21 matches for the national team and scored two goals.”
The “Ballon d'Or” showed interest in Maza following his nomination for the “Kopa” award for the best young player in the world for 2026, making him the first Algerian player in history to enter the list of nominees for this award.
