The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is preparing to implement Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology starting from the group stage of its two main club competitions. This initiative is expected to be active from the 2026-2027 season, both in the Champions League and in the Confederation Cup.

This information was reported by journalist Micky Jnr, who noted that Samson Adamu, the interim Secretary General of CAF, has approved this advancement. If this measure is implemented as planned, VAR will be used from the group stage, not just during the knockout rounds.

This advancement could help refine refereeing decisions regarding disputed situations, including goals, penalties, direct red cards, and identity errors. However, its implementation will require technical resources and proper organization.
